The holidays are upon us, and with that comes lots of travel.  I am often asked what’s the best way to pack clothes to keep them from wrinkling.  Below are a few tips that will have you packed up and wrinkle free upon arrival.

  1. Select the appropriate piece of luggage.  Don’t try to fit a week’s worth of clothes into your smallest piece of luggage, or backpacks.
  2. Lay all of your clothing, accessories and toiletries out where you can see them all at one time.
  3. Pack heavy items on the bottom, lighter items on top; i.e., jackets on the bottom, then pants, then shirts.
  4. Place each pair of shoes in a plastic bag to keep them from soiling your clothing.  Place them heel to toe to minimize space, and place along the sides and bottom of the suitcase.
  5. Button all buttons and zip all zippers.
  6. Fold your pants lengthwise, and stack them.  Fold the stack in half at the knee and wrap in a plastic dry cleaning bag.
  7. Lay your shirts out in one stack, folding arms across the chest area. Place tissue paper between each shirt.  Then roll the entire stack loosely from the bottom.  Place the entire roll of shirts in a plastic dry cleaning bag.
  8. Fold jackets similarly to your shirts…button all buttons, lay arms across the chest, and fold in half horizontally, making a rectangular shape.
  9. Stack skirts, with tissue between layers, then fold entire stack in half horizontally, forming a rectangular shape.  Place these in a plastic bag and lay on top of pants.
  10. Dresses should be placed in plastic dry cleaning bags, and folded in half horizontally, then placed near the top of the suitcase.
  11. Roll socks up and stick inside your shoes.
  12. Roll belts and place in bottom of suitcase.
  13. Roll ties loosely and place on top.
  14. Place underwear along perimeter of suitcase for extra cushion and stabilization.
  15. Fold pajamas and place on top.
  16. Place toiletries in separate carry-on luggage if possible.  If not, place anything that might leak into zippered plastic bags, and place in a toiletry bag.  Place this bag at one end of the suitcase, near the top.
  17. Upon arrival, unpack and hang your clothing.  If anything is wrinkled, hang it in the bathroom and let the steam shower run for a little while.  This will sometimes alleviate any  wrinkles.
